EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says
The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
